Reading through cell culture notes for common tests. I realize that i doubt i will go into cell culture, for FYP or in the future. Its scary. Serum, killing the animals just to grow cells... I dunno, i just can't stand the thought i guess.
Killing the animals to understand their body makeup and to test drugs and medications to see how it can help the animals of the same species is acceptable to me. But killing millions of young cows etc. just to collect serum, just to grow cells, it just shoots something through me i guess. Cloning, its scary. Normally people would just go cloning is scary cause theres another you running around. Or that theres ethical and legal issues. But behind the scenes, to create that clone and to develop the technology for cloning, how many animals normal lives have been sacrificed?
I must admit though that cell culture plays its own part in science. Its has given many helpful discoveries to help better our lives in one way or another. But still the line between right and wrong is so thin, maybe even indistinguishable? I guess in science, maybe theres no right and wrong? All the scientists debating all over the world, trying to set the line between right and wrong, but ultimately its up to individual perception. There are so many questions to answer...
During this week's practical, My whole group refused to touch the egg. I too was disgusted. It was an unborn chick! And its just going to die like this. The scientists all over the world authoried this. But yet, what if that chick was an unborn human baby? Would they stil authorise it? I doubt so. I think my passion for animals come from this i guess. Its so unfair to the animals most of the time. We humans are very obviously the dominating animal in the world today. We control everything and state everything on being humane. We justify our humanity by giving human rights. But what about the animals? On the newspapers, there are articles on violation of human rights almost everyday. But yet, millions of animals all over the world are experiencing worst. Where are the articles on animal rights? They are after all living beings like us.
We are humans, we are the alpha species for now. But that doesn't give us the right to do as we please to other less powerful species. Rather we have the responsibility to protect them. Each of us are interlinked after all. One species' downfall will affect all the rest in one way or another.
Karma anyone?
